To submit cards for grading: choose a grading company and service level based on each card's declared value, inspect and clean each card, put it in a penny sleeve and a semi-rigid card saver, complete the online submission form, pack the cards tightly between cardboard, and ship with tracking and insurance. Expect turnaround from a few weeks to a few months depending on the service level.
Submitting cards for grading is simple once you’ve done it once. The steps below apply to the major grading companies; always check the company’s current instructions before you ship.
1. Choose the company and service level
Pick a grading company based on the card type and your goal (resale, collection or authentication). Service levels are set by declared value and turnaround time, and the fees rise with both.
2. Pre-inspect each card
- Check centering, corners, edges and surface under bright light.
- Gently wipe fingerprints or dust from the surface with a clean microfiber cloth.
- Leave out cards unlikely to grade high enough to justify the fee.
3. Sleeve and holder
- Put each card in a new penny sleeve.
- Slide it into a semi-rigid card saver.
- Avoid tape on the holders unless the company asks for it.
4. Fill in the submission form
Most companies use an online form. For each card, enter the year, set, card number, player or character name, and declared value. Accurate details speed up processing.
5. Pack safely
- Stack the card savers and sandwich them between two pieces of cardboard larger than the cards.
- Secure with rubber bands (not too tight) or tape on the cardboard only.
- Use a sturdy box with padding so nothing moves.
- Include the printed submission form.
6. Ship and track
Ship with tracking and insurance for the full declared value. Keep your receipt and tracking number.
After you ship
The company logs your order, grades the cards and returns them in slabs. You can usually track progress online, and grades often appear before the cards ship back.

Common questions
What is declared value?
The value you state for each card on the submission. It sets the service level and fee, and the grader's liability if something goes wrong. Declare the realistic value of the card after grading.
Should I use toploaders or card savers for submissions?
Most grading companies prefer semi-rigid card savers, which are easier to remove cards from without damage. Check the company's current packing instructions.
Can I submit cards in person?
Many graders accept submissions at major card shows, and some partner shops collect submissions. Check each company's website for options.
